Scheduled Maintenance for your Generator

Maintenance Procedure Checklist:
- Inspect for visual damage and/or unusual wear and tear
- Inspect all visible fuel and electrical connections
- Clean debris from generator and wipe down enclosure
- Ensure all switches/breakers in normal operating position
- Inspect and test battery and charging system
- Check cold weather kit for proper operation (if applicable)
- Test proper startup and transfer operator function
- Check for any improper noises or vibrations
- Check grid voltage and generator voltage output
- Check grid frequency and generator output frequency
- Ensure there are no corroded or loose connections
- Simulate a power outage
- Change engine oil with synthetic oil per specifications
- Change engine oil filter
- Change spark plugs (with proper gap)
- Change air filter
- Confirm proper valve clearance. Adjust as necessary.
- Inspect and test all fuel connections.
- Check to make sure that fuel pressure is accurate
- Touch up paint as necessary on any gas piping
- Answer any questions about operation, maintenance, or upgrades
- Advise the customer on any foreseeable future preventative maintenance items, upgrades, or repairs

1. What can I power in my home with a backup generator?
A free in home consultation is the best way to determine what YOUR house will need. If you just need the basics, like a sump pump, refrigerator, furnace, and a few lights, an 8 kW would work. If you want to back up a house with large electric loads, then a 22 kW may be what you need. There are many options in between. -
2. What does it cost?
An automatic standby generator from Finger Lakes Power Systems will add safety, security, and value to your home. The starting investment for turn-key automatic standby generator system is between $9,000 and $14,000 for whole house solutions. Most projects land in the $10-12k area. Please use this as a budgetary number. Every system is unique, and pricing could go up or down, based on the needs of your home. -
3. Who does the work?
We take pride in doing our own work with our employees. The office staff takes care of all the permits, inspections, and utility company coordination. When it comes to installation day, you will have brand certified installers on site working with the tools. -
4. Do I need a building permit and electrical inspection?
Yes, a building permit and electrical inspection is required. Our staff coordinates the application and scheduling as part of the turn-key project. -
5. How much maintenance is required on a typical generator?
Most automatic standby generators, including Kohler and Generac models, require maintenance yearly or every 200 run-hours, whichever comes first. We set up a maintenance agreement with you at the time of installation to ensure that your unit operates for a very long time. As a Kohler Platinum Dealer and Generac Premier Dealer, we are factory certified in the repair and maintenance of all aspects of the generator system. -
